Getting to Pattaya
Pattaya sits roughly 130 km southeast of Bangkok via Motorway 7 (the Bang Na-Chonburi expressway, posted limit 120 km/h). Four practical options.
Drive or taxi. 90 minutes from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) in clear conditions, 2 to 3 hours in Bangkok rush windows (07:00-09:00, 16:00-19:00). Suvarnabhumi to Pattaya is ~120 km; Don Mueang (DMK) to Pattaya is ~160 km. Grab from BKK runs 1,400 to 2,200 THB; private fixed-rate transfers run 1,500 to 2,500 THB.
Bus. Roong Reuang Coach is the dominant operator, with departures from Ekkamai (Eastern Bus Terminal) every 30 minutes from 06:00 and from Mo Chit 2 at scheduled times. Journey time 2 to 2.5 hours. Standard fare 163 THB one-way; premium and pre-booked seats run 175 to 435 THB. Air-conditioned, reliable, the default for solo travellers without luggage.
Minivan. Faster on paper, less comfortable in practice. Departs Ekkamai and (on a reduced schedule) Victory Monument. 150 to 200 THB.
Future: high-speed rail. The Don Mueang-Suvarnabhumi-U-Tapao line, designed to bring Bangkok to Pattaya inside 45 minutes, is contracted to Asia Era One (CP Group majority shareholder). The State Railway of Thailand timeline as of 2026 targets contract signing in July 2026, Notice to Proceed in August 2026, and a 5.5-year construction-and-testing phase pointing to service in 2032. The project has slipped multiple times since 2019; a 2025 House dissolution pushed Cabinet approval of contract amendments into the next government. Treat 2032 as a planning marker, not a guaranteed date. The line is not under active construction.
Airports
Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Primary international hub, ~120 km north of Pattaya, 90 minutes by motorway. Most international arrivals land here.
Don Mueang (DMK). Budget-airline hub (AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion). ~160 km from Pattaya, 2 to 2.5 hours by car.
U-Tapao (UTP). 30 km south of Pattaya. Currently a small international gateway: limited scheduled flights plus charter traffic from China, Russia, and the Gulf. The U-Tapao and Eastern Aviation City development project, run by UTA under a 50-year concession, formally launched on 3 April 2026 after EECO and UTA signed the joint contract management agreement on 29 January 2026. Phase 1 is sized for at least 12 million passengers per year (terminal floor area ~157,000 sqm); the long-term phased target is 60 million. EECO expects Phase 1 operations to begin in 2031. Royal Thai Navy Runway 2 is under construction with completion targeted for May 2028. Today U-Tapao remains the most convenient airport for Na Jomtien, Huay Yai, southern Pattaya, and Rayong residents; the expansion is in delivery, not yet operational.
Getting around Pattaya
Songthaew (baht bus). The backbone. Shared pickup trucks with bench seats running fixed loops along Beach Road (southbound), Second Road (northbound), and Jomtien Beach Road. As of 10 April 2026 the official fare is 15 THB for short hops within central Pattaya and up to 20 THB for longer legs to Jomtien or Naklua, replacing the long-standing 10 THB minimum. Wave one down, press the buzzer to stop. Drivers are reluctant to break large notes; carry 20s. Routes do not cover East Pattaya, Huay Yai, or hill areas.
Grab and Bolt. 24/7 across central Pattaya. Central rides 60 to 150 THB. Metered, air-conditioned, reliable. Response times slow noticeably in Pratumnak, Na Kluea, and East Pattaya.
Motorbike rental. The expat default. 2,000 to 3,500 THB per month for a 110-125cc automatic scooter from established shops; daily rates 150 to 350 THB. Requires an International Driving Permit or a Thai licence. Mandatory third-party insurance is minimal; private personal-accident cover is strongly recommended.
Car rental. 15,000 to 25,000 THB per month. Practical for families in East Pattaya or Huay Yai. Not necessary for beachfront condo living.
Own vehicle. Foreigners can register vehicles in Thailand. A Thai driving licence is obtainable on a valid foreign licence or IDP plus a short test.
Walking and cycling. Jomtien Beach promenade and the Wongamat strip are flat and walkable. Pratumnak is hilly. Central Pattaya is walkable but hot and chaotic. Cycling infrastructure is minimal outside the Jomtien beachfront path.
